Its purpose is to <strong data-start=\"308\" data-end=\"360\">automatically record entries and exits<\/strong> for all non-EU travelers whenever they cross a Schengen border.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"473\" data-end=\"745\">Instead of stamping your passport, the system will record your <strong data-start=\"528\" data-end=\"587\">fingerprints, a facial photo, and the exact date<\/strong> you enter or leave. Initial data registration<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"493\" data-end=\"581\">The first time you cross an external border of a participating country, you\u2019ll need to:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"582\" data-end=\"885\">\n<li data-start=\"582\" data-end=\"636\">\n<p data-start=\"584\" data-end=\"636\">Scan your valid passport or travel document.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"637\" data-end=\"762\">\n<p data-start=\"639\" data-end=\"762\">Have your facial photo and, where required, fingerprints taken.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"763\" data-end=\"885\">\n<p data-start=\"765\" data-end=\"885\">The system will automatically record when and where you enter or leave.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 data-start=\"887\" data-end=\"926\">2. Faster crossings after registration<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"927\" data-end=\"1232\">Once your details are registered, future crossings become simpler. You\u2019ll identify yourself with your passport at a checkpoint, kiosk, or automated lane where your biometric data is already on file. The aim is less paperwork and shorter waits.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"1234\" data-end=\"1275\">3. Automation, kiosks, and apps<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1276\" data-end=\"1550\">Some countries will enable self-service kiosks and mobile systems to carry out part of the process beforehand or more efficiently at the border. This is part of the \u201csmart borders\u201d strategy that Europe is developing.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"1552\" data-end=\"1586\">4. What data will be collected?<\/h4>\n<ul data-start=\"1608\" data-end=\"2022\">\n<li data-start=\"1608\" data-end=\"1737\">\n<p data-start=\"1610\" data-end=\"1737\">The traveler\u2019s full name, passport number, and the date and place of entry and exit.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1738\" data-end=\"1755\">\n<p data-start=\"1740\" data-end=\"1755\">Facial image<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1756\" data-end=\"1889\">\n<p data-start=\"1758\" data-end=\"1889\">Fingerprints (normally 4) for those who do not require a visa or depending on the territory.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1890\" data-end=\"2022\">\n<p data-start=\"1892\" data-end=\"2022\">The dates of your stay and automatic calculation of the permitted period of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 data-start=\"2024\" data-end=\"2070\">5. Data security and responsible use<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"2071\" data-end=\"2315\">The digital system will be subject to EU data protection laws, with rules governing how information is stored and used.
