You see the flight price and think:

“Perfect. This trip is going to cost next to nothing.”

But a few weeks later, once you add baggage, airport transfers, tourist taxes, payment and currency exchange fees, tips, and internet access abroad, the real cost looks nothing like that first number.

These are the hidden travel costs: small expenses we tend to overlook when planning a vacation. Together, they can turn a budget getaway into a much more expensive trip than expected.

The good news? Many of these expenses aren't actually surprises. You can plan for them, compare your options, and cut costs if you factor them in from the start.

This guide covers the most common ones so you can build a more realistic travel budget, make better decisions, and avoid surprises before and during your vacation.

The flight was cheap. Then the extras appear: carry-on baggage, a checked bag, seat selection, priority boarding, or even fees for certain payment methods.

By the time you reach the final screen, that bargain doesn't look quite so cheap.

To avoid this hidden cost, don't compare ticket prices alone. Check what baggage the fare includes, the size and weight limits, and how much it costs to add a bag on both the outbound and return flights.

What matters is comparing the total flight price with all the extras you actually need. Sometimes an airline that looks more expensive works out cheaper because baggage is already included.

Take the route between Palma de Mallorca and Valencia (PMI–VLC), for example. A Ryanair ticket might look cheaper than an Air Europa ticket at first. But once you add the bags you need, Air Europa could work out cheaper overall. It depends on the dates, fare, and baggage you choose.

Before booking, compare the full price with all the services you need. The first number you see in a flight search isn't always what you'll end up paying.

The journey everyone forgets: from the airport to your accommodation

Getting from the airport to your accommodation is one of the most overlooked expenses in a travel budget.

We compare flights and hotels down to the last cent, but rarely check what it costs to get to the place we're staying. That cheap flight might land at a secondary airport a long way from the city.

Bus, train, private transfer, taxi, or rideshare: the price can vary widely depending on your destination, arrival time, and the distance. If you land late at night, public transit may have stopped running, or you may face a late-night surcharge.

Before booking, check where the airport actually is, what transportation is available, when it runs, and how long it takes to reach your accommodation.
