Planning a getaway with three vacation days starts with separating the days you take off work from the days you can actually travel.<\/strong> Then it\u2019s about choosing sensible departure and arrival times, a convenient place to stay, and a few things you really want to do.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t need to cover an entire country to feel like you\u2019ve broken out of your routine. \u201cIt\u2019s only two hours away\u201d sounds perfect. Until you add the trip to the airport, the time you need before departure, getting off the plane, and reaching your accommodation.<\/p>\n

Add it all up in both directions: home \u2192 station or airport \u2192 journey \u2192 arrival \u2192 accommodation<\/strong>. If you\u2019re driving, include stops and parking; if you\u2019re renting a car, add pickup and drop-off time.<\/p>\n

A hypothetical one-way journey:<\/strong> 45 minutes to the airport + arriving 2 hours before departure + a 2-hour flight + 45 minutes to leave the terminal + 1 hour to the hotel = 6\u00bd hours. A 3-hour train ride, with 30 minutes to reach the station, a 30-minute buffer, and another 20 minutes to your accommodation, adds up to 4 hours and 20 minutes.<\/p>\n

In this example, the train gives you back 2 hours and 10 minutes on the outward journey. This isn\u2019t a rule about which type of transportation is best: it\u2019s a way to compare the actual time involved. To narrow down your list, set three criteria: your total budget, the maximum travel time you\u2019re willing to accept, and the kind of trip you want.
