How does the eSIM from TurTrip work in Tanzania?
Frequently asked questions about the eSIM for Tanzania
What is an eSIM and how does it work in Tanzania?
An eSIM is a digital SIM card installed directly on your smartphone, with no physical SIM card required.
With TurTrip, you can buy your eSIM for Tanzania online in just a few minutes, install it easily on your phone and get online straight away. Once activated, the eSIM automatically connects to local networks in Tanzania, so you can enjoy mobile data throughout your trip, without roaming or swapping SIM cards.
How does unlimited data work on the Tanzania eSIM?
All unlimited-data eSIMs for Tanzania include unlimited data throughout your trip, so you can explore without worrying about losing your connection. Here’s how it works: you get 1 GB per day at maximum speed, ideal for smooth browsing.
Once you’ve used your daily 1 GB of high-speed data, your service stays active. Your speed is reduced to 1.25 Mbps, so you can still use WhatsApp, Google Maps and social media, check bookings, find restaurants, or read your email. You stay connected even after using your daily high-speed allowance.
Your 1 GB of high-speed data resets automatically every 24 hours. There’s nothing you need to do: each day of your trip, you get a fresh high-speed allowance to use your phone as usual.
Which devices are compatible with the TurTrip eSIM for Tanzania?
The TurTrip eSIM for Tanzania is compatible with many models of iPhone, Samsung, Google Pixel and other brands with built-in eSIM technology.
To use it, your device must meet two basic requirements:
- Support eSIM technology.
- Be unlocked (not locked to a carrier).
Also check that your phone supports the mobile network bands used at your destination.
Before buying, find your model in our search tool: Check my phone. You can check compatibility and any restrictions based on the version or country of purchase.
For more information, see our guide to eSIM-compatible phones.
What coverage does my eSIM provide in Tanzania?
The coverage is good in Tanzania’s main cities and tourist areas, like Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma and Zanzibar. The connection uses the local Airtel Tanzania and Vodacom Tanzania networks, providing a stable connection during your trip.
In rural areas, mountain regions, or on long road trips, speeds may vary, although the connection generally remains available for basic use.
Does this eSIM include calls and SMS with a local Tanzanian number?
No. All TurTrip plans for Tanzania include only mobile data. For calls, you can use VoIP apps such as WhatsApp, LINE, Skype or Telegram over mobile data or Wi-Fi.
How long is my eSIM plan valid for?
It depends on the plan you choose, such as 7, 15, or 30 days. The validity period starts when you set up or activate your eSIM in Tanzania, not when you pay.
All TurTrip eSIMs also have a 6-month validity period. If you don’t use your eSIM during that time, it expires automatically 6 months after its last use.
What connection speeds can I expect in Tanzania?
The eSIM offers 3G, 4G, LTE, and 5G speeds depending on your location and available coverage. The connection is usually very good in urban areas; in less populated areas, speeds may be lower, with stability taking priority over maximum speed.
Can I use a hotspot to share data with other devices?
Yes. With your TurTrip eSIM, you can share data using tethering or hotspot with other devices, such as a laptop, tablet or another phone, as long as your device supports it.
Any data you share is deducted from your plan, just as it would be if you were browsing on your phone. Video calls, browsing on a computer and streaming can use data more quickly.
We recommend sharing your connection occasionally and checking your usage in your TurTrip account to stay in control. If you need more data during your trip to Tanzania, you can easily top up your plan at any time.
Do I need to enable data roaming in Tanzania?
Yes. For your eSIM to work correctly, enable data roaming. There are no extra charges because you’re not roaming with your usual carrier.
What should I do if my eSIM doesn’t activate when I arrive?
If your eSIM does not activate when you arrive in Tanzania, do not worry: a few simple steps usually resolve the issue. First, check that your TurTrip eSIM is selected as your mobile data line in your phone’s settings and that data roaming is turned on.
If it doesn’t connect right away, try restarting your device or turning on and off airplane mode for a few seconds to start a new network search. Also make sure you haven’t enabled a data limit or a power-saving mode that could be blocking your connection.
Your eSIM will usually connect after these steps. If you’re still offline, log in to your TurTrip account and contact our support team, who will help you resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
Can I install my eSIM before travelling to Tanzania?
Yes, and we recommend it. You can install your eSIM before departure and turn on mobile data only when you arrive in Tanzania. Until then, you will not use any data or days of validity.
Does the eSIM work on domestic flights within Tanzania?
Yes. After a domestic flight, you can use your eSIM once you land and turn on mobile data, as long as there is coverage at your destination.
Does the eSIM work in Zanzibar, the Serengeti and Tanzania’s rural areas and national parks?
Yes, the TurTrip eSIM works in Tanzania wherever there is mobile coverage. In tourist areas and major cities, as well as in Zanzibar, the connection is usually stable and sufficient for browsing, maps and messaging apps.
In national parks such as the Serengeti, rural areas, nature reserves or on safaris, coverage may be limited or unavailable in certain places. This is normal and depends on local infrastructure and your exact location, not on the eSIM.
The signal may vary when travelling between cities, lodges or parks. That is why we recommend downloading offline maps, saving important information and not relying solely on mobile connectivity when visiting natural areas.
Does the eSIM work with banking apps, transportation apps, and local services?
Yes. Local banking apps (CRDB, NMB Bank) and apps such as Uber, Bolt, Google Maps or WhatsApp work normally with your data eSIM during your trip to Tanzania.
Can I buy an eSIM when I am already in Tanzania?
Yes. You can buy your eSIM anytime, anywhere. It is available to download immediately and is quick to install.
