How does the TurTrip eSIM work in Japan?
Frequently Asked Questions About eSIMs for Japan
What is an eSIM, and how does it work in Japan?
Una eSIM es un perfil virtual que se instala directamente en tu dispositivo; no necesitas una tarjeta física. En Japan, when you install the profile directly from your TurTrip account or, if you prefer, using a QR code, your phone will automatically connect to the selected network (Rakuten, SoftBank or KDDI) sin necesidad de cambiar SIMs físicas.
Which devices are compatible with the TurTrip eSIM for Japan?
The TurTrip eSIM for Japan is compatible with many models of iPhone, Samsung, Google Pixel and other brands with built-in eSIM technology.
To use it, your device must meet two basic requirements:
- Support eSIM technology.
- Be unlocked (not locked to a carrier).
Also check that your phone supports the mobile network bands used at your destination.
Before buying, find your model in our search tool: Check my phone. You can check compatibility and any restrictions based on the version or country of purchase.
For more information, see our guide to eSIM-compatible phones.
Can I install the eSIM while I'm in my home country?
Yes, and it is highly recommended. Download and install your eSIM at least 2 hours before your flight, preferably connected to a stable Wi-Fi network. This way, upon landing in Japan, you’ll only need to enable mobile data and roaming to connect immediately.
How does unlimited data work on Japan's eSIM?
All unlimited data eSIMs for Japan include unlimited data throughout your trip, so you can stay connected without worrying about running out. The system is simple and transparent: you get 1 GB per day at maximum speed, ideal for smooth browsing.
Once you’ve used your daily 1 GB of high-speed data, your service stays active. Your speed is reduced to 1.25 Mbps, so you can still use WhatsApp, Google Maps and social media, check bookings, find restaurants, or read your email. You stay connected even after using your daily high-speed allowance.
Your 1 GB of high-speed data resets automatically every 24 hours. There’s nothing you need to do: each day of your trip, you get a fresh high-speed allowance to use your phone as usual.
Does this eSIM include calls and text messages with a local Japanese number?
No. All TurTrip plans for Japan are data-only. If you need to make traditional calls, you will have to use VoIP apps (WhatsApp, LINE, Skype, etc.) that work over mobile data or Wi-Fi.
How long is my eSIM plan valid for?
It depends on the plan you choose (for example, 7, 15, or 30 days). The validity starts when you set up or activate the eSIM in Japan, not from the payment date.
All TurTrip eSIMs also have a 6-month validity period. If you don’t use your eSIM during that time, it expires automatically 6 months after its last use.
What is the data coverage like in Japan?
-
Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, Fukuoka (urban areas): Excellent 4G and 5G coverage, with average LTE speeds of 50 Mbps or higher and 5G exceeding 200 Mbps.
-
Rural and mountainous areas: SoftBank and KDDI provide near-complete coverage even in remote regions (band 19/28). Rakuten mainly covers cities; in uncovered areas, it automatically roams on the KDDI or SoftBank network.
-
Small islands (remote Okinawa, Hokkaidō): Speeds may drop to 3G or slow 4G. Check the official KDDI/SoftBank coverage map if you plan to visit very remote areas.
Can I use a hotspot to share data with other devices?
Yes. All networks (Rakuten, SoftBank, KDDI) allow hotspot use at no extra cost.
Do I need to manually activate the eSIM when I land in Japan?
If you have already installed the profile before travelling: when you turn on your phone in Japan and enable "Mobile Data" and "Data Roaming", the eSIM will connect automatically. If there is no immediate signal, restart the device or toggle Airplane Mode to force a network search.
What should I do if my eSIM doesn’t activate when I arrive?
-
Make sure your phone is unlocked and that Airplane Mode is turned off.
-
Make sure you've installed the correct profile and that the selected eSIM is the one that's active under “Mobile Data.”
-
Turn data roaming on and off.
-
Restart the device.
-
If the issue persists, log in to your TurTrip account and contact our support team so we can help you.
How can I check if my phone supports the right bands for Japan?
Check the manufacturer’s official website to ensure your model includes at least bands 1, 3, 19, and 28 for 4G (LTE) and n77/n78 for 5G. If it only supports European bands (for example, 800/1800/2600 MHz), it may work in cities (band 3/1) but lose signal in rural areas where band 19/28 is primarily used.
Does roaming apply between prefectures?
No. Once your eSIM is active, there is no such thing as “internal roaming”: You'll get the same data plan in Tokyo, Sapporo, Okinawa, or any other prefecture. Only on very remote islands with limited network coverage might you be switched to 3G at no extra cost.
