How does the eSIM from TurTrip work in Chile?
Frequently asked questions about eSIMs for Chile
What is an eSIM and how does it work in Chile?
An eSIM is a digital profile installed directly on your device; you don’t need a physical SIM card.
With TurTrip, buy your eSIM online, install it on your phone, and get connected without a physical SIM card. Once activated, your eSIM automatically connects to available local networks so you can use the internet throughout your trip to Chile.
Which devices support the TurTrip eSIM for Chile?
The TurTrip eSIM for Chile supports many models of iPhone, Samsung, Google Pixel and other brands with built-in eSIM technology.
To use it, your device must meet two basic requirements:
- Support eSIM technology.
- Be unlocked (not locked to a carrier).
Also check that your phone supports the mobile network bands used at your destination.
Before buying, find your model in our search tool: Check my phone. You can check compatibility and any restrictions based on the version or country of purchase.
For more information, see our guide to eSIM-compatible phones.
What coverage does my eSIM offer in Chile?
Coverage is very good in cities and tourist areas such as Santiago, Valparaíso, Viña del Mar, Concepción and Antofagasta. Your eSIM connects through the networks of WOM and Movistar Chile.
In rural areas, mountains and on long road trips, speeds may vary, although the connection generally remains available for maps and messaging.
How does unlimited data work on the Chile eSIM?
All unlimited-data eSIMs for Chile include unlimited data throughout your trip, so you can explore without worrying about losing your connection. Here’s how it works: you get 1 GB per day at maximum speed, ideal for smooth browsing.
Once you’ve used your daily 1 GB of high-speed data, your service stays active. Your speed is reduced to 1.25 Mbps, so you can still use WhatsApp, Google Maps and social media, check bookings, find restaurants, or read your email. You stay connected even after using your daily high-speed allowance.
Your 1 GB of high-speed data resets automatically every 24 hours. There’s nothing you need to do: each day of your trip, you get a fresh high-speed allowance to use your phone as usual.
Does this eSIM include calls and SMS with a local Chilean number?
No. All TurTrip plans for Chile are data-only. For calls, use VoIP apps such as WhatsApp, LINE, or Skype over mobile data or Wi-Fi.
How long is my eSIM plan valid for?
It depends on the plan you choose, such as 7, 15, or 30 days. The validity period starts when you set up or activate your eSIM in Chile, not when you pay.
All TurTrip eSIMs also have a 6-month validity period. If you don’t use your eSIM during that time, it expires automatically 6 months after its last use.
What connection speeds can I expect in Chile?
The eSIM offers 3G, 4G, LTE, and 5G speeds depending on coverage and location. Browsing is usually fast and smooth in urban areas; speeds may be lower in less populated areas, with stability taking priority over maximum speed.
Do I need to turn on data roaming in Chile?
Yes. For your eSIM to work properly in Chile, turn on data roaming in your phone’s settings. This does not incur extra charges: you are using the local network linked to your TurTrip eSIM, rather than your usual carrier’s roaming service.
If roaming is off, your phone may not connect to the network even if your eSIM is installed correctly. We recommend turning it on before using data and keeping it on throughout your trip to avoid interruptions.
Can I share data with other devices (tethering)?
Yes. You can share your TurTrip eSIM’s data connection with other devices using tethering or a mobile hotspot, such as a laptop, tablet, or another phone, as long as your device supports it.
Shared data comes out of your plan, just as it does when you browse on your phone. Video calls, browsing on a computer, and downloads can use data faster.
We recommend using your hotspot when needed and checking your usage in your TurTrip account. If you need more data during your trip, you can easily top up your plan at any time.
What should I do if my eSIM won’t connect when I arrive in Chile?
If your eSIM won’t connect when you arrive in Chile, a few simple steps will usually fix it. First, make sure your TurTrip eSIM is selected as the primary line for mobile data in your device’s settings and that data roaming is turned on.
If you don’t connect right away, restart your phone or switch airplane mode on for a few seconds, then off, to restart the network search. Also check that a data limit or power-saving mode isn’t blocking your connection.
These steps usually resolve the issue in a few minutes. If you’re still offline, contact our support team and we’ll help you get connected as soon as possible.
Can I install my eSIM before traveling to Chile?
Yes, and we recommend it. You can install your eSIM for Chile before you travel, while you still have Wi-Fi and time to set it up. When you arrive in Chile, simply turn on mobile data and data roaming to get online.
Installing the eSIM in advance doesn’t use data or start your plan’s validity period. Your eSIM only activates when it detects a local network in Chile. Installing it in advance saves you from relying on airport Wi-Fi or wasting time when you land.
Will my eSIM work in Patagonia or northern Chile?
Yes, your TurTrip eSIM works in Patagonia and northern Chile, as long as mobile coverage is available. In cities, larger towns and tourist areas, the connection is generally stable and suitable for browsing, maps and messaging.
Chile is a very large country with sparsely populated areas. In remote areas, national parks, mountains and on long routes, coverage may be limited or speeds lower. This is normal and depends on your location, not your eSIM.
For trips to remote areas, we recommend downloading offline maps and planning your data use, especially for long journeys.
Does the eSIM work with banking apps, transportation apps, and local services?
Yes. Your TurTrip eSIM works normally in Chile and lets you use apps for online banking, payments, transport and other local services that need an internet connection.
You can use banking apps, Google Maps, Uber, Cabify, public transport apps, booking services, WhatsApp and other usual platforms during your trip. With this data eSIM, these apps work just as they do with a standard mobile connection.
Some apps may require SMS verification. You can receive these messages on your usual number if you keep your physical SIM active. Many travelers therefore use their TurTrip eSIM for data and their usual SIM only for calls or messages.
Can I buy an eSIM when I’m already in Chile?
Yes. You can buy your eSIM for Chile even after you arrive, as long as you have an internet connection to complete the purchase and installation, such as Wi-Fi.
Delivery is instant, and you can install your eSIM on your phone in minutes. Once installed, simply turn on mobile data and data roaming to get online without visiting a store or buying a local SIM card.
Buying your eSIM online saves time, avoids lines and makes it easy to get connected wherever you are.
