How does the eSIM from TurTrip work in Macao?
eSIM FAQs for
Macau
What is an eSIM and how does it work in Macao?
An eSIM is a digital profile installed directly on your device; you don’t need a physical SIM card.
With TurTrip, buy your eSIM for Macao online, install it on your phone, and get connected without a physical SIM card.
Once activated, your eSIM automatically connects to the local networks of Companhia de Telecomunicações de Macau (CTM) and Hutchison Telephone (Macau) Company Limited so you can use the internet in Macao throughout your trip, without roaming charges or hassle.
Which devices are compatible with the TurTrip eSIM for Macau?
TurTrip’s eSIM for Macao supports many models of iPhone, Samsung, Google Pixel and other brands with built-in eSIM technology.
To use it, your device must meet two basic requirements:
- Support eSIM technology.
- Be unlocked (not locked to a carrier).
Also check that your phone supports the mobile network bands used at your destination.
Before buying, find your model in our search tool: Check my phone. You can check compatibility and any restrictions based on the version or country of purchase.
For more information, see our guide to eSIM-compatible phones.
What coverage does my eSIM offer in Macao?
Data coverage in Macao is very good in major urban and tourist areas, such as Macao’s historic center, Cotai Strip, Taipa, and Coloane. Your connection uses the networks of Companhia de Telecomunicações de Macau (CTM) and Hutchison Telephone (Macau) Company Limited, providing a stable browsing experience throughout your trip to Macao.
In quieter areas or while traveling, speeds may occasionally vary, though a connection is usually available for basic tasks such as messaging, maps, or online searches.
How does unlimited data work on the Macao eSIM?
All unlimited-data eSIMs for Macao include unlimited data throughout your trip, so you can explore without worrying about losing your connection. Here’s how it works: you get 1 GB per day at maximum speed, ideal for smooth browsing.
Once you’ve used your daily 1 GB of high-speed data, your service stays active. Your speed is reduced to 1.25 Mbps, so you can still use WhatsApp, Google Maps and social media, check bookings, find restaurants, or read your email. You stay connected even after using your daily high-speed allowance.
Your 1 GB of high-speed data resets automatically every 24 hours. There’s nothing you need to do: each day of your trip, you get a fresh high-speed allowance to use your phone as usual.
Does this eSIM include calls and SMS with a local Macao number?
No. All TurTrip plans for Macao are data-only. For calls, use VoIP apps such as WhatsApp, LINE, or Skype over mobile data or Wi-Fi.
Does my Macau eSIM work in Hong Kong, Taiwan or mainland China?
No. The Macao eSIM only provides coverage within Macau, connecting to the local networks available in the region.
Although Macao and Hong Kong are politically part of China, they have independent telecommunications systems under the “one country, two systems” principle. Meanwhile, Mainland China operates separately in terms of mobile networks and regulation, so the Macao eSIM is not valid in mainland China or Hong Kong.
If you travel to any of these destinations, you’ll need an eSIM plan specific to Hong Kong, Taiwan or Mainland China, designed to guarantee you stable and surprise-free connection from the very first moment.
Is there a “Great Firewall” in Macao?
No. In Macau there is no Great Firewall or a censorship system like the one in China (mainland). Internet access in Macao is open and free of widespread restrictions.
You can use services and apps such as Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Netflix, banking apps, maps and international services as usual without the need for a VPN. Everything works as it does in Europe or other countries with open internet access.
This distinction matters because Macao and mainland China have completely distinct internet systems, although the destinations are sometimes confused. With your TurTrip eSIM in Macao, you can browse freely from the start.
How long is my eSIM plan valid for?
It depends on the plan you choose, such as 7, 15, or 30 days. The validity period starts when you set up or activate your eSIM in Macao, not when you pay.
All TurTrip eSIMs also have a 6-month validity period. If you don’t use your eSIM during that time, it expires automatically 6 months after its last use.
What connection speeds can I expect in Macao?
The eSIM offers 3G, 4G, LTE, and 5G speeds depending on your location and the available coverage. In urban areas, browsing is generally smooth. In less populated areas, speeds may be lower, with priority given to connection stability.
Can I use a hotspot to share data with other devices?
Yes. With your TurTrip eSIM, you can share data using tethering or hotspot with other devices, such as a laptop, tablet or another phone, as long as your device supports it.
Any data you share is deducted from your plan, just as it would be if you were browsing on your phone. Video calls, browsing on a computer and streaming can use data more quickly.
We recommend sharing your connection occasionally and checking your usage in your TurTrip account to keep it under control. If you need more data during your trip to Macao, you can easily top up your plan at any time.
Do I need to enable data roaming in Macao?
Yes. For your TurTrip eSIM to work correctly in Macao, keep data roaming turned on in your phone’s settings. This doesn’t incur any additional charges, because you’re using the local network associated with your eSIM, rather than roaming with your regular carrier.
If data roaming is off, your phone may not connect even if your eSIM is installed correctly. We recommend turning it on before using data and keeping it on throughout your trip to avoid interruptions.
Enabling roaming is essential to use the internet in Macao without hassle, whether you’re in a city, traveling by road, or in more remote areas.
What should I do if my eSIM doesn’t activate when I arrive?
If your eSIM doesn’t activate when you arrive in Macao, don’t worry: a few steps usually solve it. First, check that your TurTrip eSIM is selected as your mobile data line and that data roaming is turned on in your phone's settings.
If you don’t connect right away, try restarting your device or turning on and off airplane mode for a few seconds to trigger a network search. Also check that you don’t have a data limit or a power-saving mode that could be blocking your connection.
These steps usually help your eSIM connect to the local network in Macao. If you still have no connection, log in to your TurTrip account and contact our support team, who will help you resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
Can I install my eSIM before traveling to Macao?
Yes, and we recommend it. You can install your eSIM before your trip and turn on mobile data only when you arrive in Macao. Until then, you won’t use any data or days of validity.
Does the eSIM work on domestic flights within Macao?
Yes. After a domestic flight, you can use your eSIM once you land and turn on mobile data, as long as there is coverage at your destination.
Does my eSIM work throughout Macao, including quieter areas such as Taipa or Coloane?
TurTrip’s eSIM works in Macao wherever there is mobile coverage. In places such as Macao’s historic center, Cotai Strip, Taipa, or Coloane, the connection is usually stable and suitable for browsing, maps, and messaging apps.
In quieter areas or nature parks, coverage can be more limited in some spots. This is normal and depends on local infrastructure, not how the eSIM works.
While traveling or on longer journeys, the signal may occasionally vary. We therefore recommend downloading offline maps, saving important information in advance and not relying solely on mobile connectivity at all times.
Does the eSIM work with banking apps, transportation apps, and local services in Macao?
Yes. TurTrip’s eSIM works as usual in Macao and lets you use banking apps, online payments, maps, bookings, transportation, ride-hailing services, WhatsApp and other local services that require an internet connection.
As this is an eSIM for mobile data, apps work just as they do with a regular mobile connection. You can check your bank account, use Google Maps, manage bookings or use messaging apps in urban areas and while traveling around Macao.
Some banking or security apps may require SMS verification. If so, you’ll receive the code on your regular number if you keep your physical SIM active. That’s why many travelers use their TurTrip eSIM for data and their regular SIM only for important calls or messages.
Can I buy an eSIM when I’m already in Macao?
Yes. You can buy your eSIM for Macau even if you’re already in Macau, as long as you have internet access to complete your purchase and installation, such as Wi-Fi at your accommodation, a café or an airport.
The delivery is instant and you can install your eSIM on your phone in just a few minutes. Then turn on mobile data and data roaming to get online, without visiting a store or buying a local SIM card.
Buying your eSIM online in Macao lets you save time, avoid language barriers and get online easily throughout the territory, whether you’re in urban areas, on the road or exploring natural areas.
