eSIM FAQs for

Taiwan

What is an eSIM and how does it work in Taiwan?

An eSIM is a virtual profile installed directly on your device; you don’t need a physical SIM card.

With TurTrip, buy your eSIM for Taiwan online, install it on your phone, and get connected without a physical SIM card.

Once activated, your eSIM automatically connects to the local Taiwan Mobile and Chunghwa Telecom networks, so you can enjoy internet in Taiwan throughout your trip, without roaming charges or hassle.

Which devices are compatible with the TurTrip eSIM for Taiwan?

The TurTrip eSIM for Taiwan is compatible with many models of iPhone, Samsung, Google Pixel and other brands with built-in eSIM technology.

To use it, your device must meet two basic requirements:

  • Support eSIM technology.
  • Be unlocked (not locked to a carrier).

Also check that your phone supports the mobile network bands used at your destination.

Before buying, find your model in our search tool: Check my phone. You can check compatibility and any restrictions based on the version or country of purchase.

For more information, see our guide to eSIM-compatible phones.

What coverage does my eSIM offer in Taiwan?

Data coverage in Taiwan is excellent in major cities and tourist destinations such as Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung, Tainan or Hualien.
Your connection uses the networks of Taiwan Mobile and Chunghwa Telecom, providing a reliable browsing experience throughout your trip in Taiwan.

In rural or mountainous areas, or on long journeys, speeds may occasionally vary. You can usually still use the connection for basic tasks such as messaging, maps or looking things up online.

How does unlimited data work with the Taiwan eSIM?

All unlimited-data eSIM plans for Taiwan include unlimited data throughout your trip, so you can explore without worrying about losing your connection. Here’s how it works: you get 1 GB per day at maximum speed, ideal for smooth browsing.

Once you’ve used your daily 1 GB of high-speed data, your service stays active. Your speed is reduced to 1.25 Mbps, so you can still use WhatsApp, Google Maps and social media, check bookings, find restaurants, or read your email. You stay connected even after using your daily high-speed allowance.

Your 1 GB of high-speed data resets automatically every 24 hours. There’s nothing you need to do: each day of your trip, you get a fresh high-speed allowance to use your phone as usual.

Does this eSIM include calls and texts with a local Taiwanese number?

No. All TurTrip plans for Taiwan are data-only. For calls, use VoIP apps such as WhatsApp, LINE, or Skype over mobile data or Wi-Fi.

Does my Taiwan eSIM work in Hong Kong, Macau or mainland China?

No. The Taiwan eSIM only provides coverage in Taiwan, connecting to the local networks of Taiwan Mobile and Chunghwa Telecom.

Although Hong Kong and Macau are politically part of China, they have independent telecommunications systems under the “one country, two systems” principle. Meanwhile, Mainland China operates separately when it comes to mobile networks and regulations.

If you travel to any of these destinations, you’ll need an eSIM plan specific to Hong Kong, Macau or Mainland China, designed to guarantee you stable and surprise-free connection from the very first moment.

Is there a “Great Firewall” in Taiwan?

No. In Taiwan there is no Great Firewall or a censorship system like the one in China (mainland). Internet access in Taiwan is open and free of widespread restrictions.

You can use services and apps such as Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Netflix, banking apps, maps and international services as usual without the need for a VPN. Everything works as it does in Europe or other countries with open internet access.

This distinction matters because Taiwan and mainland China have completely distinct internet systems, even though the two destinations are sometimes confused. With your TurTrip eSIM in Taiwan, you can browse freely from the moment you arrive.

How long is my eSIM plan valid for?

It depends on the plan you choose, such as 7, 15, or 30 days. Your plan’s validity starts when you set up or activate your eSIM in Taiwan, not when you pay.

All TurTrip eSIMs also have a 6-month validity period. If you don’t use your eSIM during that time, it expires automatically 6 months after its last use.

What connection speeds can I expect in Taiwan?

The eSIM offers 3G, 4G, LTE, and 5G speeds depending on your location and the available coverage. In urban areas, browsing is generally smooth. In less populated areas, speeds may be lower, with priority given to connection stability.

Can I use a hotspot to share data with other devices?

Yes. With your TurTrip eSIM, you can share data using tethering or hotspot with other devices, such as a laptop, tablet or another phone, as long as your device supports it.

Any data you share is deducted from your plan, just as it would be if you were browsing on your phone. Video calls, browsing on a computer and streaming can use data more quickly.

We recommend using your hotspot occasionally and checking your usage in your TurTrip account to keep it under control. If you need more data during your trip in Taiwan, you can easily top up your plan at any time.

Should I turn on data roaming in Taiwan?

Yes. For your TurTrip eSIM to work properly in Taiwan, you need to keep data roaming turned on in your phone’s settings. This doesn’t incur any additional charges, because you’re using the local network associated with your eSIM, rather than roaming with your regular carrier.

If data roaming is off, your phone may not connect even if your eSIM is installed correctly. We recommend turning it on before using data and keeping it on throughout your trip to avoid interruptions.

Turning on data roaming is an essential setup step for using the internet in Taiwan without hassle, whether you’re in a city, on a road trip or in a more remote area.

What should I do if my eSIM doesn’t activate when I arrive?

If your eSIM doesn’t activate when you arrive in Taiwan, don’t worry: a few simple steps usually fix it. First, check that your TurTrip eSIM is selected as your mobile data line and that data roaming is turned on in your phone's settings.

If you don’t connect right away, try restarting your device or turning on and off airplane mode for a few seconds to trigger a network search. Also check that you don’t have a data limit or a power-saving mode that could be blocking your connection.

These steps usually help your eSIM connect to a local network in Taiwan. If you still have no connection, log in to your TurTrip account and contact our support team, who will help you resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Can I install my eSIM before traveling to Taiwan?

Yes, and we recommend it. You can install your eSIM before your trip and only turn on mobile data when you arrive in Taiwan. Until then, no data or days of validity are used.

Does my eSIM work on domestic flights within Taiwan?

Yes. After a domestic flight, you can use your eSIM once you land and turn on mobile data, as long as there is coverage at your destination.

Does my eSIM work in remote areas of Taiwan, such as Alishan, Taroko Gorge or Sun Moon Lake?

The TurTrip eSIM works in Taiwan wherever there is mobile coverage. In cities such as Taipei, Kaohsiung or Taichung, the connection is generally stable and suitable for browsing, maps and messaging apps.

In more remote or natural areas, like Alishan, Taroko Gorge or Sun Moon Lake, coverage can be limited or unavailable in some locations. This is normal and depends on the terrain and local infrastructure, rather than the eSIM.

The signal may occasionally vary on mountain trails or long journeys. That’s why we recommend downloading offline maps, saving important information in advance, and not relying solely on mobile data in these areas.

Does the eSIM work with banks, transportation apps and local services in Taiwan?

Yes. Your TurTrip eSIM works normally in Taiwan, letting you use banking apps, online payments, maps, bookings, transportation, ride-hailing services, WhatsApp and other local services that require an internet connection.

Since this is a data-only eSIM, apps work just as they would with a regular mobile connection. You can check your bank account, use Google Maps, manage bookings or use messaging apps in cities such as Taipei, Kaohsiung or Taichung, and while traveling around Taiwan.

Keep in mind that some banking or security apps may require SMS verification. If so, you’ll receive the code on your regular number if you keep your physical SIM active. That’s why many travelers use their TurTrip eSIM for data and their regular SIM only for important calls or messages.

Can I buy an eSIM after arriving in Taiwan?

Yes. You can buy your Taiwan eSIM even if you’re already in the country, as long as you have internet access to complete your purchase and installation, such as Wi-Fi at your accommodation, a café or an airport.

The delivery is instant and you can install your eSIM on your phone in just a few minutes. Then turn on mobile data and data roaming to get online, without visiting a store or buying a local SIM card.

Buying your eSIM online in Taiwan lets you save time, avoid language barriers and connect easily across the country, whether you’re in a city, on a road trip or exploring nature.
