An eSIM is a virtual profile installed directly on your device; you don’t need a physical SIM card.

With TurTrip, you can buy your eSIM for Hong Kong online, install it on your phone, and get connected without a physical SIM card.

Once activated, your eSIM automatically connects to the local networks of China Mobile Hong Kong Company Ltd, SmarTone Mobile Communications Ltd, Hong Kong Telecommunications (HKT) Limited, and Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings Limited so you can use the internet in Hong Kong throughout your trip, without roaming charges or hassle.

Which devices support TurTrip’s eSIM for Hong Kong?

To use it, your device must meet two basic requirements:

  • Support eSIM technology.
  • Be unlocked (not locked to a carrier).

Also check that your phone supports the mobile network bands used at your destination.

Before buying, find your model in our search tool: Check my phone. You can check compatibility and any restrictions based on the version or country of purchase.

For more information, see our guide to eSIM-compatible phones.

What coverage does my eSIM offer in Hong Kong?

Data coverage in Hong Kong is excellent in major urban and tourist areas, such as Central, Kowloon, Wan Chai, and Lantau.

Your connection uses the networks of China Mobile Hong Kong Company Ltd, SmarTone Mobile Communications Ltd, Hong Kong Telecommunications (HKT) Limited and Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings Limited, providing a stable browsing experience throughout your trip to Hong Kong.

In less populated areas, natural areas, or on long journeys, speeds may occasionally vary, though a connection is usually available for basic tasks such as messaging, maps, or online searches.

How does unlimited data work on the Hong Kong eSIM?

All unlimited-data eSIMs for Hong Kong include unlimited data throughout your trip, so you can explore without worrying about losing your connection. Here’s how it works: you get 1 GB per day at maximum speed, ideal for smooth browsing.

Once you’ve used your daily 1 GB of high-speed data, your service stays active. Your speed is reduced to 1.25 Mbps, so you can still use WhatsApp, Google Maps and social media, check bookings, find restaurants, or read your email. You stay connected even after using your daily high-speed allowance.

Your 1 GB of high-speed data resets automatically every 24 hours. There’s nothing you need to do: each day of your trip, you get a fresh high-speed allowance to use your phone as usual.

Does this eSIM include calls and SMS with a local Hong Kong number?

No. All TurTrip plans for Hong Kong are data-only. For calls, use VoIP apps such as WhatsApp, LINE, or Skype over mobile data or Wi-Fi.

Does my Hong Kong eSIM work in Taiwan, Macau or mainland China?

No. The Hong Kong eSIM only provides coverage within Hong Kong, connecting to the local networks of China Mobile Hong Kong Company Ltd, SmarTone Mobile Communications Ltd, Hong Kong Telecommunications (HKT) Limited, Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings Limited.

Although Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau are politically part of China, they have independent telecommunications systems under the “one country, two systems” principle. Meanwhile, Mainland China operates separately when it comes to mobile networks and regulations.

If you travel to any of these destinations, you’ll need an eSIM plan specific to Taiwan, Macau or Mainland China, designed to guarantee you stable and surprise-free connection from the very first moment.

Is there a “Great Firewall” in Hong Kong?

No. In Hong Kong there is no Great Firewall or a censorship system like the one in China (mainland). Internet access in Hong Kong is open and free of widespread restrictions.

You can use services and apps such as Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Netflix, banking apps, maps and international services as usual without the need for a VPN. Everything works as it does in Europe or other countries with open internet access.

This distinction matters because Hong Kong and mainland China have completely distinct internet systems, although the destinations are sometimes confused. With your TurTrip eSIM in Hong Kong, you can browse freely from the start.

How long is my eSIM plan valid for?

It depends on the plan you choose, such as 7, 15, or 30 days. The validity period starts when you set up or activate your eSIM in Hong Kong, not when you pay.

All TurTrip eSIMs also have a 6-month validity period. If you don’t use your eSIM during that time, it expires automatically 6 months after its last use.

What connection speeds can I expect in Hong Kong?

The eSIM offers 3G, 4G, LTE, and 5G speeds depending on your location and the available coverage. In urban areas, browsing is generally smooth. In less populated areas, speeds may be lower, with priority given to connection stability.

Can I use a hotspot to share data with other devices?

Yes. With TurTrip’s eSIM in Hong Kong, you can share your data through tethering or a hotspot with other devices, such as a laptop, tablet, or another phone, provided your smartphone supports this feature.

The data you share is deducted from your plan, just as if you were browsing on your phone. Video calls, working on a computer, streaming, and downloads can use data faster.

We recommend sharing your connection occasionally and checking your usage in your TurTrip account to keep it under control. If you need more data during your trip to Hong Kong, you can easily top up your plan at any time and stay connected without interruption.

Do I need to enable data roaming in Hong Kong?

Yes. For your TurTrip eSIM to work correctly in Hong Kong, keep data roaming turned on in your phone’s settings. This doesn’t incur any additional charges, because you’re using the local network associated with your eSIM, rather than roaming with your regular carrier.

If data roaming is off, your device may not connect to the network even if your eSIM is installed correctly. We recommend enabling it before using data and keeping it on throughout your stay in Hong Kong to avoid connection drops.

Enabling roaming is essential to use mobile internet in Hong Kong without hassle, whether you’re in Central, Kowloon, or Causeway Bay, or traveling to islands, nature parks, or quieter areas.

What should I do if my eSIM doesn’t activate when I arrive?

If your eSIM doesn’t activate when you arrive in Hong Kong, don’t worry: a few steps usually solve it. First, check that your TurTrip eSIM is selected as your mobile data line and that data roaming is turned on in your phone's settings.

If you don’t connect right away, try restarting your device or turning on and off airplane mode for a few seconds to trigger a network search. Also check that you don’t have a data limit or a power-saving mode that could be blocking your connection.

These steps usually help your eSIM connect to the local network in Hong Kong. If you still have no connection, log in to your TurTrip account and contact our support team, who will help you resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Can I install my eSIM before traveling to Hong Kong?

Yes, and we recommend it. You can install your eSIM before your trip and turn on mobile data only when you arrive in Hong Kong. Until then, you won’t use any data or days of validity.

Does the eSIM work on domestic flights within Hong Kong?

Yes. After a domestic flight, you can use your eSIM once you land and turn on mobile data, as long as there is coverage at your destination.

Does my eSIM work in remote parts of Hong Kong, such as Lantau Island, Lamma Island, Sai Kung or the New Territories?

TurTrip’s eSIM works in Hong Kong wherever there is mobile coverage. In busy urban areas such as Central, Kowloon, Tsim Sha Tsui, Causeway Bay, or Wan Chai, the connection is usually fast and stable, ideal for browsing, maps, and messaging apps.

In more remote or natural areas, such as Lantau Island, Lamma Island, Sai Kung or hiking trails in nature parks, coverage can be more limited or patchy in some spots. This is normal and depends on the terrain and local infrastructure, not the eSIM.

On ferry rides, mountain trails, or journeys outside urban areas, the signal may occasionally vary. We therefore recommend downloading offline maps, saving important information in advance and not relying solely on mobile connectivity when exploring Hong Kong’s natural areas.

Does the eSIM work with banking apps, transportation apps, and local services in Hong Kong?

Yes. TurTrip’s eSIM works as usual in Hong Kong and lets you use banking apps, online payments, maps, bookings, transportation, ride-hailing, WhatsApp, and other local services that need an internet connection.

Since this is a data-only eSIM, apps work just as they do with a regular mobile connection. You can check your bank account, use Google Maps, manage bookings, or use messaging apps in urban areas such as Central, Kowloon, and Causeway Bay, and while traveling throughout Hong Kong.

Keep in mind that some banking or security apps may require SMS verification. In that case, you’ll receive the code on your usual number if you keep your physical SIM active. That’s why many travelers use their TurTrip eSIM for data and their regular SIM only for important calls or texts while in Hong Kong.

Can I buy an eSIM when I’m already in Hong Kong?

Yes. You can buy your eSIM for Hong Kong even if you’re already there, provided you have internet access to complete the purchase and installation, for example through Wi-Fi at your accommodation, a café, or the airport.

The delivery is instant and you can install the eSIM on your phone in just a few minutes. Once installed, simply turn on mobile data and data roaming to start browsing, without visiting a store or buying a local SIM card.

Buying your eSIM online in Hong Kong lets you save time, avoid potential language barriers and get online right away, whether you’re in urban areas such as Central, Tsim Sha Tsui or Causeway Bay, or exploring natural areas or nearby islands.
